Public or Private? Photo Cards

Knowing the difference between public and private is an important early step in body safety. These printable photo cards make it simple and calm to talk about. Your child sorts everyday places into public and private, which opens up gentle conversations about privacy, closing the door, and knowing he/she can always tell a safe grown-up.

There are 10 places to sort:

  • Public places (where lots of people can be): supermarket, playground, beach, classroom, library and bus

  • Private places (where we can be on our own or with family): bathroom, bedroom, change room and hospital room

What's included

  • 10 photo cards (6 public and 4 private places)

  • A cover page listing every place, with simple ideas for using the cards

Ways to use them

  • Make a public pile and a private pile, and talk about what we do in each place

  • Chat about why we close the door for toileting, bathing and getting changed

  • Use a soft toy to explain that private parts are the parts covered by swimmers, using the correct names in a calm, everyday voice

  • Bring the cards out again at bath time or before a trip to the pool change rooms

Good to know

  • Best suited to ages 3 to 6

  • Print, cut and laminate for lots of play

  • Created by a qualified early childhood teacher, and linked to the Keeping Safe themes in our Joyora programs

  • Joyora members can find the Public or Private Picture Sort activity in the app, ready to use with these cards
